/ranton Dammit people, don’t click on weird looking email links!!!!!!!!! Just got off the phone with my dad. “Did you see the email from [redacted] yesterday? It looks like he found some good weight loss stuff.” Me - search through spam folder, there it is. Nothing about weight loss, just an email from my brother with no subject and a link. Fuck dad, why did you click on the damn link? Why would [redacted] send you that email? Think about it and realize he wouldn’t so it’s clearly a scam / drive by virus download / SCAM . Hopefully nothing got on his computer and he actually runs a full virus scan and maybe gets it checked at the computer store before he does anything that could compromise his online security. But seriously WHY WOULD YOU CLICK THE FUCKING LINK THAT IS BLATANTLY OBVIOUSLY NOT FROM YOUR SON AND CAN ONLY BE SOMETHING BAD TO PUT ON YOUR COMPUTER??????????????????? /rantoff

Kinja'd!!!

Online security isn’t that hard people. Don’t click on weird looking random links. If you get something from one of your acquaintances that looks weird it’s probably a scam from a spoof email address. Don’t click on anything that looks suspicious unless you verify it is legit from the person who sent it via an alternate means of communication . Use a password manager. They are easy to use and make you exponentially more difficult to crack than someone who uses the same password for everything and infinitely more difficult to crack than someone who’s password is “password”. Don’t send passwords through email. I can’t tell you how badly it pisses me off when someone sends a password protected file and the damn password is in the email. Can people actually be that fucking stupid? Don’t answer that, it’s rhetorical.

Two crypto viruses at my company in the last 3 months. We have to use open folder permissions on our shared folders so they all get infected each time it happens. Idiots

My wife actually got a very similar email a few weeks ago. She is normally very good about internet security, but this was a very clever spammer. The email made it through Gmails spam filter, directly into her priority Inbox, and was spoofed with her mother’s name as the sender, complete with a short little message that her mother could have easily written. Luckily, she viewed it on her phone, and it appears that no malware made an intrusion.

These guys are getting good.

My sister actually fell for one of those MS support scammers. At no point did my dumbass of a sibling take the time to think about weird it is that some strange organization would somehow know exactly what was happening to her computer. She was actually even arguing with my Mom on the phone about how they were totally legit and she was overreacting to the whole thing.

Even the fact that they sent her to a website to pay 250 dollars by inputting your checking account number and routing number didn’t set off any alarm bells.

My sister is the epitome of being technically fucking illiterate. She even has the balls to make fun of my Mother because after years of trying to convince her, she finally listened to my advice to start using a password manager.

It's not just your dad, this is a huge problem at large companies and even places like the DoD.

my company backups every 6 hours, so not a huge deal, still good to chastise the exec’s who have admin rights and infect their team.

My dad has a bad habit of using auto-send links on websites and not adding a message. Unless I have SOME proof that this actually came from you, I’m not opening it. Subject: HEY CHECK THIS OUT! followed by a sketchy bit.ly or youtu.be link does not tell me that I’m about to watch a bunch of guys in privately owned Mig-21s do some formation flying over Bermuda. Need the deets, dad.

My friend works for a Defense Contractor (I cannot say which), and they were very nearly hacked a few years ago. Some enterprising individual (or foreign agent) scattered some USB drives around their company parking area, hoping to trick some employee into grabbing the malware-infested drive and inserting it into their work PC to see if it belonged to a coworker. Fortunately, someone in their IT department was the first to notice the suspicious drives, and immediately sent out a company-wide warning.

Oh yea we have backups out the wazoo too, but halting everyone from adding new files while I restore is a huge pain.

Hello. We would like to contact you via carrier pigeon, however ongoing disputes between our trans-Pacific fleet and your local carriers are disrupting communications. The Godwits are tired of being mocked for their lack of crests and inability to say “g’day, mate” with their long beaks.

Perhaps we can make arrangements through Fed-Ex? If you would kindly send a correct address and a bank account number so we can verify your residence, we will get things squared away as soon as possible.

About once every (or every-other) quarter, my office does a phishing test by sending fake scam emails to random people. Despite the nearly constant reminders from the cyber security folks, one of my coworkers ALWAYS clicks on the damn link, and then proceeds to whine about having to take the required security training because he failed the test.

The one time someone saved his sorry ass, I found out later that the link would actually lock out your computer access and refuse your credentials until you contacted the cyber security team. I can only imagine how bad that day would’ve been if he hadn’t been stopped by one of my other coworkers.
